Photon-Counting CT enhances native heart valve assessment

    This prospective study evaluated the performance of photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) in the assessment of native heart valves, comparing it with conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT). The study included 33 patients undergoing coronary CT angiography using both PCD-CT and EID-CT acquired with retrospective ECG-gating. PCD-CT demonstrated superior image sharpness and conspicuity of the aortic, mitral, and pulmonary valves, with improved visualization of commissures, fine anatomical details, and valvular calcifications. Notably, PCD-CT allowed more accurate localization of calcifications within valve leaflets, while overall calcification volumes were comparable between the two techniques. Objective image quality analysis showed a significantly lower width at mid height of the aortic valve with PCD-CT, reflecting its higher spatial resolution. Overall, PCD-CT provided enhanced subjective and quantitative image quality, enabling improved depiction of native valve anatomy and potentially supporting earlier and more accurate diagnosis of valve disease.
