One-beat protocol combined with 60 kVp ultra-low tube voltage may reduce radiation and iodine contrast dose while enhancing coronary image quality in contrast-enhanced coronary CT angiography

    In this prospective single-center study, 107 patients underwent contrast-enhanced coronary CT angiography (CCTA). The population was divided into two groups: a conventional group, scanned at 100 kVp with 45 mL of iodine contrast agent at an injection rate of 4 mL/s, and a low-dose group, scanned at 60 kVp with 28 mL of iodine contrast agent at an injection rate of 2.5 mL/s. The one-beat protocol was used in both groups. All examinations were assessed in terms of objective image quality based on CT value, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), subjective image quality scores, and radiation dose reduction. The quantitative analysis revealed that the low-dose group achieved significantly higher CT values, SNR and CNR for the aorta as well as a significantly lower radiation dose. The one-beat protocol with ultra-low 60 kVp tube voltage can help to improve image quality while reducing radiation dose and iodinated contrast dose in CCTA.
