THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHT

Multiple oncologic applications of MDCT

Dear mdct.net users,

MDCT technology has recently had a significant impact on clinical oncological imaging and, consequently, on the diagnosis and management of cancer. In particular, MDCT is an effective and reliable tool for characterizing hypervascular liver lesions, as illustrated in Dr. Ciolina and Prof. Laghi’s latest Focus on and in the selected literature presented in this newsletter.

Additional content presented here examine other oncological applications of MDCT. An essay analyses the advantages of texture analysis, a non-invasive method for the quantitative assessment of tumor heterogeneity, while a review of the book Dual Energy CT in Oncology gives us insight into post-processing image analysis and lesion characterization. Finally, the two clinical cases included here focus on the use of CT colonography in detecting and differentiating between benign and malignant masses.

We welcome suggestions for new topics to be covered in future issues: please contact us at  editorial@mdct.net.

Texture analysis for “dummies”
M. Ciolina, B. Ganeshan, A. Laghi

Texture analysis, first introduced to medical imaging in 1973, is an image-processing algorithm that can be used to quantify tissue heterogeneity based on the distribution of pixel gray-level intensity, coarseness and regularity within an image. view »

ANALYSIS AND OPINION

Dual Energy CT in Oncology
M. Rengo

The book Dual Energy CT in Oncology is the first work entirely dedicated to the oncologic applications of the new and fascinating technology called dual energy CT (DECT), an innovative imaging modality that makes truly multiparametric CT images. view »
