Advanced CT Angiography for Aortic Dissection: The Key to Accurate Diagnosis

Dear readers,

Aortic dissection is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt and precise diagnosis to guide clinicians toward the most appropriate and timely surgical or medical management. The Stanford classification remains the cornerstone for categorizing aortic dissection, providing clear and reliable criteria based on the specific anatomical features of each type. CT angiography (CTA) plays a pivotal role in the differential diagnosis among the various forms of aortic dissection. Ongoing technological advances in CTA have helped to further refine the original Stanford classification, evolving it into a more comprehensive system that incorporates additional key parameters — ultimately enabling a more individualized approach to treatment.

In the podcast featured in this Newsletter, Professor Loewe retraces the milestones in CTA development that have shaped the current, refined Stanford classification now extended to include all the essential diagnostic factors required for accurate identification of aortic dissection subtypes.

The two articles referenced below present algorithms and predictive models designed to enhance the diagnostic workflow of CTA by supporting radiologists in reducing assessment time while improving the accuracy of scan interpretation.

Finally, Professor Loewe’s clinical case guides readers step by step through the rapid and accurate recognition of an aortic dissection in a 49-year-old patient, based entirely on CTA findings, leading to the most effective therapeutic strategy.
