Dear readers,
CT colonography (CTC) is acknowledged as one of the most reliable and effective imaging modalities for scanning the colon and diagnosing potential pathologies, such as colorectal cancer, polyps and diverticular disease, providing optimal results in cases of failure of conventional colonoscopy. Its performance can be enhanced by the use of iodinated contrast medium, and the dose exposure can be minimized by associating the recently developed artificial intelligence-based reconstruction algorithms, as recommended by the guidelines of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) and CT Colonography Working Group.
In this Newsletter, Prof. Laghi, President of ESGAR and a co-founder of the CT Colonography Working Group, presents a new videographic dedicated to the advantages of CTC in which he also illustrates the procedure step-by-step for patients and radiologists to ensure an excellent CTC diagnostic performance.
The scientific papers included in this Newsletter have been selected to demonstrate the usefulness of deep learning image analysis in reinforcing the diagnostic accuracy of CTC in colorectal cancer screening and to define the utility of CTC in following up patients after an episode of acute diverticulitis, driving clinicians towards the most appropriate subsequent management.
Finally, the proposed clinical cases offer two very interesting examples of the fundamental diagnostic role of CTC in daily clinical practice.
As usual, suggestions for topics to be covered in future issues of this newsletter are welcome: please send your proposals to us at editorial@mdct.net.
