THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS
CT: the first imaging technique for diagnosis, grading and surveillance of GEP-NETst
Gastroenteropancreatic NETs (GEP-NETs) include a wide variety of neuroendocrine tumors affecting the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. Although relatively rare, they markedly differ in biology, functionality, aggressiveness and metastatic potential, making their characterization and staging challenging.
This month’s Focus on, by Prof. Laghi’s team, illustrates in detail the imaging tools currently available for the diagnosis of GEP-NETs, where a crucial role is played by CT used alone or in combination with PET. As shown by the numerous CT images and cases reported in this Focus on, CT is the primary imaging modality applied for the diagnosis of these tumors and plays a fundamental role in detecting the primary lesion, in staging and assessing tumor functionality and liver metastases with a high level of accuracy and sensitivity.
The two clinical cases of this Newsletter demonstrate the valuable role of CT with contrast medium for a prompt and correct diagnosis of GEP-NETs, and illustrate the typical CT features observed in these patients.
