Contrast-enhanced thoracic CT can detect a 0.21% rate of mammary incidentalomas and provides specific imaging features contributing to a potential breast cancer diagnosis

A retrospective analysis from an Italian group aimed to assess the frequency and tomographic features of mammary nodules incidentally detected on contrast-enhanced thoracic CT. The authors reported a 0.21% incidence rate of incidentally detected mammary nodules on CT imaging and remarked that the assessment of specific CT scan features (post-contrast enhancement, margin irregularity, nipple retraction, skin thickening and the presence of structurally atypical lymph nodes) may substantiate a radiological suspicion of a malignant breast incidentaloma.
