A retrospective case-control study published in Neuroradiology explored the hypothetical relationship between the anatomical proximity of the styloid process (SP) and the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the risk of carotid artery dissection (CAD). Based on the images and measurements obtained with contrast-enhanced CT angiography on patients <55 years with and without CAD, the authors were able to confirm that a short SP-ICA distance may be one of the risk factors for CAD, also suggesting that CT scans should be performed on all patients with a suspected risk for CAD.
